About the event

Join us in Bozeman for some in-depth, hands-on learning of fiber processing.  Develop and practice specific skills on the path to creating your own locally-grown fiber piece!  Let's strengthen friendships, share knowledge,  and continue to build our fibershed community.  We welcome you to join us on Saturday regardless of whether you attended a workshop. Shop for fiber-related items at our Market, and stop by for a demonstration!

Sunday offers two spinning workshops for advanced beginners and up - note that Sunday workshops will be at a different location near Bozeman.


Saturday Schedule at 521 East Peach Street:


  • 8:30am - Workshop attendees begin to gather

  • 9am to 4pm - Pre-register (tickets below) for one of three workshops: Flax Processing (all day), Wool Fiber Preparation (all day). All Saturday workshops are for ALL SKILL LEVELS.

  • 9am to 4pm Marketplace and Fiber Demonstration - free & open to the public

    Karen Griffing will share her extensive knowledge of processing flax fiber to prep for spinning. You may bring flax that you've grown and retted yourself, or work with provided flax, as she teaches about rippling & retting, breaking & scutching, hackling & spinning. Not only will you connect with fiber processes extending beyond recorded history, you'll learn lots of cool vocabulary & have loads of fun! Location 521 East Peach St, Bozeman. Cost: $100 + materials fee of $15.

  • Wool Fiber Prep (Saturday)

    Instructor: Sylvia Smith. This full-day participatory overview will demonstrate and discuss the steps to prep raw wool for spinning or felting. Steps include skirting & scouring a wool fleece, and processing techniques of carding on hand carders and a drum carder, and combing. No prior experience is required. Location 521 East Peach St, Bozeman. Cost: $100 + materials fee of $15.

  • Spin Long Draw (Sunday)

    Instructor: Sylvia Smith In this class, participants will learn the differences between worsted and woolen spun yarns. Then we'll learn to seamlessly transition from short backward draw into long draw. We’ll practice long draw spinning on a couple of different preparations of wool, and we may even play with some cotton or yak! Learning this spinning technique opens the door to infinite choices of fibers, come expand your horizons! Location Near Bozeman. Cost: $50 + $15 materials fee

  • Spin Flax on a Wheel (Sunday)

    Instructor: Karen Griffing In this class you will learn how to spin the different forms of flax, using both wet- and dry-spinning techniques and trying out spinning from the fold, from rolags, and from a towel. Please bring your spinning wheel and empty bobbins. Location: Near Bozeman. Cost: $50 + $15 materials fee
