About the event
Join us in Missoula for a day of in-depth, hands-on learning of fiber processing. Develop and practice specific skills on the path to creating your own locally-grown fiber piece! Let's strengthen friendships, share knowledge, and continue to build our fibershed community. We welcome you to join us at the Reception regardless of whether you attended a workshop.
9:30am - Workshop attendees begin to gather
10am to 3pm - Register for one of three workshops: Flax Processing, Wool Processing, or Eco Printing.
4pm to 6:30pm - Reception and Speakers - free & open to the public

Flax Workshop Registration
Karen Griffing of Corvallis, MT will be sharing her extensive knowledge of processing flax fiber in preparation for spinning. You may bring flax fiber that you have grown and harvested yourself, or work with flax provided by Karen, as she teaches us about rippling and retting, breaking and scutching, hackling and spinning. Not only will you connect with fiber processes extending back beyond recorded history, you'll learn lots of cool vocabulary and have loads of fun along the way!

In this participatory overview with Sylvia Smith, you will learn the steps to prepare raw wool fiber for spinning or felting. We will discuss and practice scouring raw wool, carding with hand carders and a drum carder, and using wool combs. You'll receive a class outline that includes definitions and descriptions of techniques for future reference. Join us for this deep-dive into the wool! This workshop has a materials fee of $15 added to the ticket price for a drop-spindle & some fiber.

In this hands-on workshop with Carrie Harper, we will explore the art of transferring vibrant colors from locally gathered plants onto fabric, using an array of fresh leaves and flowers. As we unlock the beauty of nature’s palette, you will learn to create stunning prints and unique, abstract designs that are one-of-a-kind. Join us as we dive into the fascinating world of natural dyes and explore the process and history of this ancient art.
